ACD Co-Sponsors Community Design Symposium at Build Boston 2007

Community Design in Practice, the 2nd Community Design Symposium at Build Boston, takes place next week on Thursday, November 15th. The full-day event welcomes local and national practitioners and community members to education and training on community participation techniques. Sessions include highlights and lessons learned from CDRC-Boston projects; national and international examples of community participation techniques from ACD members; and insights from Boston-area building professionals on the philosophy and practice of people-centered design for buildings and neighborhoods.

The symposium is presented by the Community Design Resource Center of Boston in partnership with host the Boston Society of Architects and co-sponsors the Association for Community Design; Public Architecture; and the Social/Economic/Environmental Design (SEED) Network. For a full listing of sessions and speakers and for registration information, visit www.buildboston.com/community.

NEA Appoints Maurice Cox as Director of Design, Receives Rose Foundation Gift

Last month, National Endowment for the Arts Chairman Dana Gioia announced the appointment of Maurice Cox as Director of Design. Maurice takes on his role part-time until January, when he will be full-time at NEA. He continues in his position as Associate Professor of Architecture at the University of Virginia through this semester.

Maurice has a distinguished career in public service as a member of the Charlottesville, VA, City Council. He served for two years as Mayor of Charlottesville. Educated at the Cooper Union School of Architecture, he recently completed a Loeb Fellowship at Harvard University's Graduate School of Design.

Maurice arrives at the NEA at an exciting time. Former National Council Member Deedie Potter Rose has donated a generous gift to the Mayors' Institute on City Design through the Edward W. Rose Family Foundation. This $250,000 gift will make possible post-Institute assistance to mayors to support follow-up activities for mayors in their communities after participation at a Mayor's Institute.

For more information about Maurice Cox and Mr. and Mrs. Rose's gift to the Arts Endowment, visit http://www.nea.gov/news/news07/Cox.html.
