Notes from the Board

    Dear Friends and Colleagues:

    Thank you to all who attended Design in Action 2011, our joint meeting of the Association for Community Design and the Association of Architecture Organizations/Architecture + Design Education Network. Special kudos to our local hosts the Community Design Collaborative and our event volunteers, without whom we would not have accomplished nearly as many good things as we did at this year’s conference. And a hearty acknowledge our members, sponsors, and boards of directors whose support and encouragement made this event possible in the first place.

    We’re proud to report that we welcomed 223 delegates to this year’s meeting in Philadelphia. People came to Design in Action from 30 U.S. States and from as far away as Seoul, Korea to take advantage of this rare networking opportunity within our industry. At the public lecture featuring Teddy Cruz, our ranks swelled to more than 300.

    Taken together, design education, community design, and public programming represent a solid cross-section of today’s most important design advocates. It was exciting to see so many different groups of thinkers and doers in the same place this year at Design in Action, even if at times it made for a rather crowded event schedule. And for our two Associations, it offered incredibly fertile grounds for testing which areas might deserve continued partnership and group thought. We’re all much the better for having extended the reach of our own networks.

    We learned so many wonderful things at Design in Action 2011, from lessons on talking architecture to lessons on listening, on topics ranging from pop up urbanism to rural collaboration, and inquiries into emerging methods and necessary failures. A review here would be exhausting, so instead we’ve posted links to all presentations we received permission to share, and we’ve included a post-event survey giving you the chance to help shape where we take the dialogue.

    During one session held late in the conference came an extraordinary statement: memory is the residue of thinking. The presenter was calling attention to our deep human need to attach personal meaning to information to help make it stick, but it offers an explanation for the presence of our many organizations, as well. Design educators, community designers, and public programmers are lightning rods for stirring in others emotional connections to space, place, and problem solving, and, therefore, generating capacity for new thinking. It’s a powerful, necessary resource, and you have our deepest admiration for the work you do day-in and day-out to strengthen your local communities.

    We hope you left Philadelphia with your own bank of memories, new contacts, and ideas to test and implement in the year ahead. As the presenting organizations, ACD and AAO/A+DEN are proud to have offered you this opportunity. For those of you who are not members of either ACD and AAO/A+DEN, we certainly encourage you to become active participants in our online networks and forums and member events.

    Sincerely,

    James Wheeler

    Greetings, ACD Friends and Supporters!

    We're in the midst of an active season as planning continues for our Design in Action conference in Philadelphia, October 9-11.  And we know that you're just as busy as we are, which is why our revamped site is full of exciting information from across the ACD network.  Our big news this spring is the re-launch of our membership system and web platform, which will make it easier for you to stay in touch with fellow ACDers and share your news and good work with others.  We hope that you'll renew your membership with us today, share your updates online throughout the summer, and join us in person this fall in Philadelphia!

    Best wishes,

    Greetings, ACD Members and Friends!

    It may seem that ACD has been dormant for a long time; some of you have even asked if we’re still open for business. Rest assured, the Association for Community Design is still alive and well. Although you haven’t heard from us in quite a while, we’ve been actively recharging our organization with new ideas, new people and new partnerships with organizations and individuals who share our commitment to inclusive, community-based practice. But we’ve been remiss in not sharing those activities with you, and we apologize for being less visible this past year than you’re used to. It’s time to share much more with you about what we’ve been up to – and to invite you to share your activities and energy with us as we all prepare for the year ahead.

    I’m still surprised that 2010 has gone so fast. 2011 is already here; and if this fall’s election results are any indicator, we’ve got an interesting year ahead. As we adjust to a host of new elected officials at the state and federal level, we want to make sure that we provide you with a strong national organization advocating and supporting community based design practice and values. In fact, this is exactly the core of ACD’s mission:

    The mission of the Association for Community Design (the association) is three-fold:
    to serve practitioners, educators, individuals and organizations engaged in  community-based design and planning by serving as the primary clearinghouse for information exchange; to advance research, education, and best practices in community design; and to provide a national voice to promote education in the values of community design.

    The objective is to increase equity and justice for those with a limited voice in public
    life; promote social equality through discourse that reflects a range of values and social identities; engage communities and stakeholders in participatory decision-making; advance the right of every person to live in a socially, economically, and environmentally health community; create strategies that integrate design of the built environment with other approaches; generate ideas that are place-based solutions and which build local capacity; and promote the highest standards of quality in the design and construction of the built environment.

    Having affirmed our commitment to this mission, we are both focusing and strengthening the activities through which we put our mission into practice. In the coming months, you’ll be hearing more news from us about new initiatives such as:

    • a revised membership structure that recognizes your role as sustaining partners
    of ACD;

    • our revamped website, with an emphasis on relationship building among
    members and a strong information resource area;

    • new events to promote ACD networking at the local and regional level; and

    • improved and timely news and communications that highlight the excellent work
    of our members.

    In both our new and our ongoing activities, we cannot make ACD a vibrant and effective
    resource organization without your involvement. Whether you are volunteering on one of our committees; working with us to generate and share news and wise practices among network members; building new partnerships with like-minded individuals and organizations; or providing us with feedback to improve our service offerings, your involvement is critical to our success. Please let us know how we can make ACD membership and participation more valuable to you, and how we can engage you in the ways that matter most to your own mission and practice.

    We look forward to hearing from you and working with you in the coming months!

    Best wishes,
    Brandy H. M. Brooks
    President, 2010-11 ACD Board of Directors
